Endless supermarket trips mean families miss out on festive fun

December 18, 2013
  • Brits spend on average 8 hours 15 minutes shopping for Christmas in supermarkets
  • The average shopper had to visit 6 supermarkets last year to buy presents

18 December, 2013 – As the nation gears up for Christmas Day, new research released today by ocado.com, the online supermarket, reveals that Brits are set to spend over eight stressful hours in the supermarket aisles stocking up on festive food and drink before the family arrive.

The research reveals that last year, on average Brits spent 8 hours 15 minutes shopping for Christmas gifts and food in supermarkets. However, savvy shoppers this Christmas are looking to avoid the stress of the supermarket, with 40% of Brits choosing online shopping as a time saver.  In comparison to the standard supermarket shop, the average online Christmas shop takes just 1.5 hours at ocado.com. By saving almost six hours this Christmas you could go ice skating as a family, bake some festive mince pies or watch Love Actually nearly three times.

Last year, a typical shopper also struggled through six stores to tick off their Christmas gift list, with women, unsurprisingly, searching more than double the stores men did.  A fifth of Brits also admit to panic buying alcohol last minute, meaning they splashed out more than needed on festive booze. Online shoppers at ocado.com can amend their order up until the day before delivery, meaning extras like bottles of wine, champagne and crackers can be added easily.

Mobile shoppers get the benefit of ordering their festive fayre from anywhere, with stats from Ocado showing that during Christmas 2012 one third of all Christmas shops were ordered via a mobile device. The online supermarket offers up an exciting Christmas shop including gifts, confectionary and everything you need for the festive dinner all delivered to your table.

Jason Gissing, co-founder of Ocado noted, Shopping online at Christmas is not the future, it’s the present. Ocado customers know that spare time is too precious to waste in a supermarket, so they spend it wisely and get all their treats delivered to their table in a handy one hour slot.”
