Ocado discovers coffee is set to take over as the nation’s favourite hot drink

  • 1 in 10 coffee drinkers downs 5 cups a day
  • £3,250 spent every year by UK coffee drinkers
  • Ocado sees year on year sales of coffee flavoured products rise

Britain is no longer a nation of tea drinkers but is coffee obsessed according to a study released today by the UK’s largest online retailer, Ocado. One in ten coffee drinkers revealed that they have five cups a day and are spending over £3,000 a year on their habit.

To mark UK Coffee Week, which launches today Ocado looked at the nation’s drinking habits and found a quarter of Brits start the day with a cappuccino and one in three with a latte – the two most popular coffee types in Britain.

We’re not just talking instant - Ocado has seen an increase of 55% in the sales of coffee filters, beans and premium coffees; two in five Brits admit they have invested in specialist coffee equipment in order to become their family’s very own at-home barista. And it’s not just about the buzz – 60% of those surveyed said taste is top of the list when people choose their coffee.

Jason Gissing, Ocado Co-Founder commented: “With the nation drinking around five cups of coffee a day and exploring more and more coffee flavoured products it’s important to cater to this demand. As the largest dedicated online supermarket in the world we’re able to offer our customers an increasingly wide range of coffee related products as well as equipment to help coffee lovers pour the perfect cup in the comfort of their own home.”

Brits are becoming more adventurous with their love of coffee liqueur sales are up by more than a third (39%) and rums and whiskies - for Irish and Calypso coffees – are up over 35%. Sales of Amaretto, a key ingredient in the Italian coffee based dessert, Affogato are up a staggering 72% and Amaretto biscuits up by over a fifth (23%).
