Online supermarket Ocado trains packs of huskies to makes deliveries in extreme conditions

Ocado, the UK’s largest online supermarket, has revealed today that in response to the current on-going extreme and unseasonal weather conditions, it is training and recruiting packs of highly trained huskies to ensure that deliveries to customers across the country are not affected.

The elite delivery team of huskies and their drivers are being trained exclusively by the Siberian Husky Club based in Staffordshire to tackle any type of adverse conditions. A pack of six huskies travelling together can pull up to 708 pounds of weight – the equivalent of 8 average household weekly shopping trips.

Karen Roberts, Honorary Secretary of the Siberian Husky Club said, “Our huskies are naturally equipped to deliver groceries in all weather conditions – their thick coats protect them from the sub-zero temperatures and they are strong and fast, ideal for pulling deliveries through the snow. We’re proud to partner with Ocado to offer this unique delivery service.”

Jason Gissing, Ocado Co-Founder commented: “Our main priority is always delivering to our customers so they don’t have to endure a visit to the supermarket and our job is even more important when the weather is miserable. All of our vans are fitted with winter tyres and our determined drivers are famous for fighting through heavy snow to reach customers living in remote areas. Now we will have huskies on hand to assist where only a rig will do.”
